Viewpoints: Message from pulpit should be of love, tolerance

There was once a brochure pinned to the office door of the Rev. Penelope Duckworth, who was then Episcopal chaplain at Stanford University. The cover asked, "What did Jesus say about homosexuality?" The inside was completely blank."

Jesus said nothing regarding homosexuality," Duckworth explained to an interviewer. She said his ministry spoke more about the sins of the spirit and that the God she finds in the Bible is a "loving, forgiving and nurturing God who wants us to help create a world that accepts and empowers us all."

But there will always be those, as a friend once said, who believe the snake really did talk to Eve.
